The first ever Castle & Derwent Triathlon is now open for registration!
We are delighted to be hosting our first triathlon this year alongside our friends at Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club. We have hosted numerous GoTri events with excellent feedback on how we have managed the events. We felt this year was a natural step for Castle Tri to host a triathlon and we hope you will join us for either the Sprint or Standard distance event.
Located on the shore of the Derwent Reservoir, the sailing club will be the headquarters for the event and they offer excellent on site facilities including restaurant, clubrooms and free hot showers. Plenty of car parking and overnight camping and caravanning are also available to make it a little easier for those of you travelling to the event. For full race details read on below!
£40 entry fee
750m swim in Derwent Reservoir followed by a 20km cycle, a single lap of the reservoir on undulating tarmac roads with a total elevation of 280 meters, and a 5km run on mixed road and footpaths along the shore of the reservoir.
£45 entry fee
1,500m swim in Derwent Reservoir followed by a 40km cycle, 2 laps of the reservoir on undulating tarmac roads with a total elevation of 560 meters, and a 10km run on mixed road and footpaths along the shore of the reservoir.

Race Day Information
Race Venue and Parking
The race will be based at The Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, on the north shore of Derwent Reservoir, Northumberland, where there is a large free car park on site. The postcode for the venue is DH8 9PT.
The car park will be open before, during and after the event. Access will be extremely limited during the event so please plan to keep vehicle movements to an absolute minimum whilst the competition is underway.
Arriving on Site
When you arrive on site please follow the instructions of marshals who will guide you to the best available parking spot. Make your way to Registration which will be based inside the Sailing Club Clubhouse and will be signed for you.
Please leave your bike in your car or with friends and relatives whilst you register as you will not be able to take your bike inside the Clubhouse and you will not be able to access Transition until you have completed your registration.
Facilities on Site
Car Parking is free on site.
Competitors and supporters are welcome to use the toilets inside the Clubhouse. Whilst we will have access to the Club facilities there will be sailing club members also using them so please be respectful of the other users.
The male and female shower blocks on the ground floor have been made available. If you use them please keep them clean and tidy.
There will be a hot and cold food counter open during the event serving food and drinks.
Dogs are not permitted within the sailing club property, nor are they permitted shore side at any point around the reservoir. Please respect the wishes of the landowner, Northumbrian Water Ltd.
Registration will be only for 2 hours on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning before the race. We would encourage you to register on Saturday if possible, to minimise the rush on Sunday morning.
Registration will be open;
Saturday 3.00pm to 5.00pm.
Sunday 6.00am to 7.30am.
At registration please bring a form of photo identification with you for proof of identity.
The BTF Licence fee is not included in your entry fee. If you have a valid BTF licence you need to show it at registration. If you don’t have it then you will have to pay £5 for a licence. If you register on Saturday but don’t have it you still have to pay £5 but can get a refund on Sunday when you bring it.
If you don’t have a BTF licence then you will have to pay £5 for a day licence.
You will receive your goody bag at this point which will include;
- Coloured swim cap appropriate to the race you’ve entered
- Bike number stickers x 3 (one for your helmet, one for your bike, one spare)
- Two race numbers to attach to your race belt or bike/run top/trisuit. Your number(s) must be displayed to the rear during the bike, and to the front during the run.
- Your t-shirt. You were asked to select a size when you registered for the event. If you didn’t choose, your t-shirt size will be based on first come first served.
- A treat or two.
Please look out for body markers by the registration and transition areas, your race number will be written in indelible ink on your left leg and hand so please be prepared.
Please check you have received everything listed above before leaving registration.
Access to Transition will only be given to competitors so please do not try to take spectators into this area.
Access to Transition is granted upon display of your race number for your vest which must match the number on your arm. Once in Transition please proceed to the numbered racking which matches your race number. You should have everything you need to complete your race with you at this time. This includes:
- Swimwear including wetsuit
- Trainers and/or cycling shoes
- Helmet (NO HELMET = NO RACE)
- Race numbers
- Bike and helmet numbers
Please do not leave any bags or boxes in Transition, these should be returned to your vehicle or placed somewhere safe. This ensures all competitors have sufficient space for their equipment and reduces the chance of trip hazards.
The compulsory race briefing will take place at 7.35am in Transition. You MUST attend the briefing as all safety notices will be issued here together with any course amendments. You will be talked through the course and the race rules, it is also your chance to ask any last-minute questions you may have regarding the event.
If at any time after you have registered you decide to withdraw from the race, please advise a marshal as soon as possible before the race starts.
General Race Rules
The use of MP3 players or mobiles whilst racing is prohibited.
Any competitor, (including their family or friends) abusing our marshals or fellow competitors will be immediately disqualified.
Please remember to be courteous to the marshals. Lots of them are fellow triathletes who are officiating voluntarily.
Race starts as follows;
Sprint Race – 0800
Standard Race – 0810
The swim will have a deep water start for each wave of up to 100 competitors. Please ensure you are behind the start line with 2 minutes to go otherwise you risk delaying the start for all competitors and you may be disqualified.
The swim will be a clockwise/anticlockwise lap of 750m, the direction will be decided on the day depending on weather conditions and at the discretion of the lead swim marshal.
Sprint Race – 1 lap of the course.
Standard Race – 2 laps of the course.
Safety kayaks and powered RIBs will be on duty at all times. Should you get into any difficulties roll onto your back and raise one arm in the air. A kayak or RIB will provide immediate assistance.
Please follow swim marshal instructions at all times, if competing in the standard race it is your own responsibility to count your two laps. Follow signage to Transition at the end of your swim.
Transition to Bike
On exiting the swim there is a short run on concrete and grass to Transition.
Once in Transition put on your bike helmet and ensure the strap is fastened before touching your bike. When you are ready take your bike from the racking and follow the signage to ‘Bike Out’. You must walk/run with your bike until you are clear of Transition and have passed the ‘Bike Mount/Dismount Line’. Our marshals will be on hand to help you throughout the Transition onto your bike.
The bike route is a one lap (sprint race) and two lap (standard race) route of approximately 20km on public roads. Competitors must obey the Highway Code at all times, paying particular care at junctions. Our marshals do not have the authority to stop the traffic for you.
Please ensure you know the route. Although there will be signage and marshals throughout it is your own responsibility to navigate the course. Whilst great care will be taken to ensure the route is obstacle free, you must be aware of potholes and debris on the roads.
Failure to respect the roads and other traffic will put you at significant risk and future events in jeopardy.
Transition to Run
Dismount your bike before the ‘Mount/Dismount Line’ and walk/run with your bike to Transition, entering via the ‘Bike In’ entrance. Do not unfasten or remove your helmet until your bike is securely replaced on the racking.
Exit Transition via the ‘Run Out’ exit. You will not return to Transition or pass through Transition during the run so please ensure you have everything with you which you may need for your run before leaving Transition.
Run – General
There are two run courses of 5km (sprint) and 10km (standard), predominantly run on public roads and footpaths and will be clearly signed. It is your responsibility to ensure you are on the correct course and to follow the marshal’s directions throughout the run.
Both run routes leave the private land of the sailing club and turn right on public roads towards Millshield Car Park. For approximately 1km the run route will be on the road verge and will have oncoming traffic. Note that it is extremely likely that there will also be competitors on bikes at some point, as the cycle route shares a small part of the route. There will be additional marshals and cones in this area to help.
From Millshield to Cronkley (5km route) and from Millshield to the Dam (10km route) the run is on gravel or tarmac footpath.
Run Route – Water
There is one water station at the turning point of the 10km course. There is no water station on the 5km run so you will need to carry any water you may require with you. Water will be available at the finish line after you have finished your triathlon.
There will be water available at the finish. Please continue to keep moving as you cross the finish line as there may be other competitors behind you.
We will be taking photographs and will endeavor to capture your finish though it may not be possible to capture images of all participants.
Results will be published as soon as possible at the end of the race and emailed to competitors using the email address supplied with your online entry.
